Hume?s Dialogues concerning Natural Religion

Lecturer: James Hill

Friday, 12.30-14.05, Room 218

In discussing this classic of the philosophy of religion we will bear two particular questions in mind. Firstly, we will ask what light is shed here on attempts to prove the existence of God, and the nature of God, using reason and the experience of nature. Secondly, we will investigate how Hume?s Dialogues open up and explore a range of philosophical standpoints that one may adopt in relation to God and religion?these include agnosticism, fideism, atheism, deism, as well as traditional theism.
