The Philosophy of Mind I: The Path to the Extended Mind

Lecturer: James Hill

Monday, 17.30-19.05, Room 225

In recent years a view of the mind has developed which treats it as extended. ‘The extended mind’ is not just enclosed in one’s skull or one’s skin, but is spread out in the wider environment. In this course we will look at the different philosophical contributions that have paved the way to the extended mind, examining the work of Ryle, Wittgenstein, Dennett, Putnam, and the progress of artificial intelligence.
